The future of cork

A competition on cork and its applications

The Leica has drastically changed the evolution of the camera and it marks the beginning of camera's modern history. It was the first small light camera with extensive autonomy and high quality pictures. The traditional case was adapted to one of its key features: ready for fast use. For the competition I created a new edition of this famous camera case, based on the specific characteristics of cork.

Individual project

Design Challenge

The focus of the project was to design a cork object that could somehow pop people’s attention to the material and its potential as well as enhance its properties.

Approach

After the initial research on the properties material, a brainstorming defined the design area to focus on: isolating packaging. Several products to implement with this material were taken into consideration from food to health care products, but the limitations on finding new opportunities addressed the efforts on the market of camera cases. The workshop was then an opportunity to experiment with cork and implement the previous concept of the camera case with new features.

Solution

Cork is an insulating material which protects the camera from temperature changes, bumps, water and provides a handy use and a good feeling at the same time.

Result

Selected as one of best 20 design in the cork competition 2012 by Domaine de Boisbuchet. I attended one-week workshop in Domaine de Boisbuchet (FR) in order to create the prototype of the product.
